THE QUIRON PROJECT

Combines income generation in rural areas with sustainable development, improvement of life quality and landscape, and environmental conservation.

Project components are:

Use of renewable energy for production, income generation and improvement of life quality in rural areas.

Use of native species for production, from firewood and wood to use as shelter for cattle and wind breaks.

Restoration of degraded areas and environmental conservation.

Management of natural grasslands for cattle breeding.

Human and social development processes.

The first rural modules were implemented in Encruzilhada do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul state, in the South of Brazil. The income generation alternatives used are:

a) in the short term: alfalfa hay and/or cattle breeding. Increases monthly income by three times in the first year;

b) in the medium term: production of grapes for the wine industry. Increases monthly average income by five times from the third year;

c) in the medium and long term: wood products from plantation of native species. Increases monthly average income up to 25 times from year twenty, perpetually.
